Brazil Shokudo

Okinawa Soba in Brazil Shokudo

Coffee in Brazil is famous

This summer in 2016, Brazil fever may come to Japan because the Rio Olympics are held this summer in Brazil. And this year, the 6th world wide UCHINANCHU festival also will be held here in Okinawa!! The UCHINANCHU festival is the festival in which people who are Okinawan come to Okinawa from around the world: Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Hawaii. Okinawan people from around the world. So we decided to touch Brazilian food culture and went to Brazil Shokudo in Nago.

Brazil Shokudo is very interesting because a lot of uniforms of Brazil national soccer are carefully displayed on the wall. We were surprised that one of them is Pele’s autograph and uniform. Pele is from Brazil and a legendary soccer player in the world of soccer. So people who love soccer would become happy by Pele.
Haruka was not there

We ate Okinawa Soba in Brazil Shokudo even though the main food is maybe Brazilian foods because we had known the Okinawa Soba is very good from a rumor. So that was wonderful. Japanese soup stock was also nice and it matched with the noodles. We recommend that you should put seven delicious flavors and Koregusu, which is Okinawa traditional sake with red pepper, into the soup so the Soba will become better. In the end, we ordered Pastel which is a Brazilian food. It is like a pie and eaten with tabasco. The flavor has chicken, beef and cheese. Pastel makes you happy. You will try one!! If you visit there, we want you to choose one of the Brazilian foods instead of Okinawa soba. Brazilian foods are also delicious.

Brazil foods and Okinawa Soba
There were two Japanese people: a man and a lady who were not Brazilian. Surprisingly they are husband and wife. We heard the husband lived in San Paulo, Brazil in the past and came back to Okinawa and married the wife. They are an old couple and lovely. The old lady who is the waitress in Brazil Shokudo is very kind and friendly. It is one of the reasons that many people come there. Moreover, a Japanese famous artist had visited there. That artist’s name is Ketsumeishi. The picture of Brazil Shokudou’s appearance is used as a jacket of Ketsumeishi’s album.
PASTEL
We recommend Brazil Shokudo to you when you visit Nago. It’s also OK if you’ve already lived in Nago and you are from Nago. Brazil Shokudo is famous for Okinawa soba. It is a very interesting thing but if you want to also eat Brazilian foods, it is very good. We can feel the atmospheres of combining Brazil and Okinawa there. Before you go to Brazil, you should visit Brazil Shokudo.
LOCATION (HOW TO GO)
Brazil Shokudo is in Umusa, Nago and near the Afuro Heights, which is a building. We suggest two ways to Brazil Shokudo. First, you can get there in 15 minutes by walking or 5 minutes by car and auto bike from Meio University. You go dow
Brazil Shokudo taken by Haruka
n the road from Meio and turn left at Lawson, and then, when you can see a signal in front of Family Mart, you need to turn right. And soon, you can get there. In another way, go straight for 1 hour 30 minutes on Route 58 out of Naha airport to Nago. And you can find a hotel called Super Hotel and turn left at Super Hotel and go straight. Next you turn left at the signal front of Family Mart. Finally, you arrive. We will tell you one problem. There are not many parking spaces and it is not huge.

Aiai Farm

Don’t you always eat junk food? Do you cook your own meals? We went Aiai farm in Yagajijima. We can eat many good foods for your body here. And, we can make some food for ourselves. At Aiai farm, there are many facilities, for example, a restaurant, shop, and a handmade workshop.

In the restaurant, we can eat a lot of healthy foods such as vegetables, tofu, rice and meat grown in Nakijin. Many dishes in this restaurant were very delicious, especially the buffet. We ordered a tofu steak, dice steak, an Okinawan food. It was about 1000 yen including the buffet. In the restaurant, there are many tourists especially from mainland of Japan. We were satisfied with lunch. We could spend an enjoyable time.

We experienced home-made soy milk ice cream. How to make soy milk ice cream? First, we mix ingredients (soymilk, sugar, trehalose) and heat up it in the pot. Then, we use a round plastic container. This is a special container to make ice cream, with separate space for the liquid and ice. Pour the ingredients into the liquid space, put a lot of ice and a pinch of salt into the ice space. Close the lid, wrap the container with a towel and packing tape. Like this, we can make a ball. We play catch with the ice cream ball for about 20 minutes. It is the process to make ice cream harder. That’ all. We enjoyed making and eating ice cream. It was really delicious! If you have time, you must try! It will be a very good experience for you.

A lot of bread is made here, and dressing and jam made from fruits in Okinawa can be bought in the shop. These dressing and jam do not use additives, so it is good for your body. You can make soymilk ice cream, bread, tofu, sausages, original dressing, miso and jam by yourself. But it cost about 3000yen to make. We made soymilk ice cream. It was very interesting. Next time, I want to make bread.

And also, there are some small farms. One farm, pineapple and oranges are grown, and we can harvest these. The other raises vegetables and fruits for the restaurant or dressing and jam. These pineapples, oranges and vegetables are not given agricultural chemicals.

And also, there are some small farms. At one farm, pineapple and oranges are grown, and we can harvest these. The other raises vegetables and fruits for the restaurant or dressing and jam. These pineapples, oranges and vegetables are not given agricultural chemicals.
It has horses, two goats and many hens. Anyone can try to feed. We were surprised at the number of hens. There were so many!

Actually, Aiai farm is remodeled, and it was originally a school. Its name was the Wakugawa elementary school. It closed in 2010 and the farm borrowed from the village for free. Isao Ishimine, who is the head of the farm, said that their goal is to make the most of the school and be loved by local people. Actually, local people say that "I’m glad to see the previous atmosphere," or "I appreciate keeping it clean." Also, there’re many people playing golf on the grounds in the school and having fun. Furthermore, Aiai farm puts stress on plants. It asked a professional to make it beautiful. Some people visit there to see plants. I think the Aiai farm is a wonderful place to connect to the community

Finally, we will show you how to go to Aiai farm. It starts from Meio University. And you go to Nakijin, and turn right at the traffic light of Nakayama. Next, turn the right at the Gogayama shop. And you go down the street and can see Aiai farm on the left. If you like it, please go to Aiai farm!!

Café Hakoniwa

Do you know Café Hakoniwa? It’s a wonderful place to eat, talk, and relax. We will introduce the café.

How to get Café Hakoniwa?

If you want to go to Café Hakoniwa, the best way is to take a car or taxi because the bus does not go though. So almost all tourists rent a car. From Route 58 turn left on 84 at Super Hotel. Go about 15 minutes. After you go you can find Izumi Pineapple Park and there is a small guideboard. We thought Café Hakoniwa was not easy to find because it is located in the plentiful nature area.

What is the atmosphere of Café Hakoniwa?

The building is made of wood, and it was built about 50 years ago. The café is in Yanbaru, so it is surrounded by green. In the café, the floor and pillars are dark brown, so there is a relaxed atmosphere. The chairs and sofa are low, so it is easy to sit. We can eat and talk, and break there comfortably.

🌸Shimayasai and plenty of chicken curry: 900 yen
   (local vegetables)

This menu is healthy curry rice with yogurt. The cafe staff takes two hours to stir-fry the onion. That is the reason of the good curry taste.

Ta-Taki

Ta-taki

You can watch waterfalls and you can walk in the river. Ta-taki is a one of the famous places in Okinawa. Ta-taki is in Ogimi. If you want to see Ta-taki, you must walk in the water and do rock climbing. We had a lot of snacks, drinks and a change of clothes so we could not arrive at Ta-taki. Therefore, you should not have big bags and should wear clothes like swimming suits. We can see a lot of subtropical plants and many forms of life like a pond skater or guppies. If you arrive at Ta-taki, you can bask in the fresh air.

There is place where we can swim in clear water. We think if we go there in the summer, we can be more refreshed.

There is deep and shallow water near Ta-taki. There are a lot of big rocks growing moss. We can ride a swing made from a vine on the river.

How to go there
It takes about 20 minutes from Meio University. Then we have to walk.

**On a rainy day, we do not recommend going to Ta-taki.
If you go there on a rainy day, the river will be high, then it will be hard to walk in the water and it is really dangerous. So you may drown. **

Hiji-Otaki Park

Each year, about 35,000 visitors drive cars to get a glimpse of the breathtaking waterfall that is a wide curtain of water and straight down to a rock surface. And you are able to enjoy an adventurous landscape from the suspension bridge on your way. It is a little bit necessary to endure the hardship of the walking trail for about two hours round trip. If you can immerse yourself within the quiet forest and listen to the harmonies of the waterfall and birds, you will surely be healed and be energized for tomorrow.

The Hiji-Otaki Park is located about 30km North from Meio University. To drive through Hiji-Otaki Park is to wander into a tropical landscape on a curving road along with the shoreline and a comfortable zephyr from the East-China Sea. The spectacular fall and a stunning view from the suspension bridge are waiting for you. This park was maintained in 1995 by Kunigami Village Government together with their historical ruins where their rituals take place.

Before you go to the waterfall, there are some points about which you have to be careful. First of all, you should wear comfortable shoes. One of our member's shoe bottoms peeled off his shoe. Without shoe bottoms, it is hard to walk the path. You had better check your shoes before going to the waterfall. Second, you should prepare a towel and water. While walking the path, you sweat very much. You had better bring some towels and a 1 liter bottle of water at least.

After paid admission; 500 yen, there are some sticks which you can use if you need. It helps you go to the goal. Through the camp area, you can chose a path. I think you had better go to the new one because it doesn’t have a steep slope. You can walk without getting so tired. On the right, you can see a clear river. It is cool, so you may want to swim. Walking along the way, there is a lot of nature. You can refresh yourself. After going over the bridge, there are some steep stairs. You have to go up and down again and again. It is hard for the person who has a lack of exercise. After about 40 minutes, you can go to the waterfall.

Beyond the halfway point, we arrived at the suspension bridge. How about having a break there? There are two reasons. Firstly, I want you to see the Hiji River flowing through the Yanbaru forest from the suspension bridge. It is magnificent scenery which cannot be seen usually. So, you will be able to know that it is important to protect the beauty of nature. Secondly, I think there is a comfortable place. There is usually a cool breeze here and one can hear only the sound of wind and birds and the river. So, you could feel refreshed easily. By the way, the suspension bridge is swaying by the wind. Please be careful because the height is about 17M.

Arriving at the waterfall, we were overwhelmed by it. Then I think it will be one of the most beautiful places among other waterfalls in Okinawa. This is because the Hiji-Otaki waterfall is the largest waterfall with a drop of about 26m on the main island of Okinawa. Furthermore, we were not tired after walking up to it. Because this waterfall was so beautiful that we couldn’t take our eyes off it. This will be the opportunity to reconsider yourself who spends time without any inconvenient things.

We were sitting on the bench and having lunch in the Halfway Point. The wind felt nice. We bought lunch boxes on the way to Hiji-Otaki. We bought them in the “Co-op” which is a supermarket, but you can buy anywhere in Nago city. When you buy a lunchbox, you might just make sure whether chopsticks come with it. Actually, our lunch boxes didn't have them. We saw various plants and creatures. We could see a snake, and a Noguchigera which is a nationally protected species of bird. Some people who brought a big camera came to take the Noguchigera's picture. There are Yanbaru kuina (Gallirallus Okinawaw) and Ishikawa's frog, which are nationally protected species, but we couldn't see them.

We stopped by a cafe after going down the mountain. The cafe is in front of the entrance of the campground. We ordered “Zenzai”. “Zenzai” is an Okinawan sweet food. It is shaved ice topped with “Azuki” which is made of red beans and “Shiratama” which is made of flour. Since we were exhausted from hiking, we can feel more taste than usual. “Zenzai” is 380yen. And also there are also a Curry, cake and so on.

During your daily life, you may be tired sometimes. Then we need time to rest. If you need it, how about going to Hiji-Ootaki? You can have the opportunity to reconsider yourself without any inconvenient things. Let's get the energy for the future in great nature.

How to get the Hiji-Otaki Park from Nago City.

There is only one route.

1.  Take Route 58 North through the Okuma intersection, just before FamilyMart Okuma.

2. Find the direction board for Hiji-Otaki Park above the road.

3. Make a Right and head East.

4. Follow the direction boards above the road.
